Estadio Akron

Estadio Akron opened in 2010 as the home of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, known universally as Chivas. It sits in Zapopan, a municipality within the greater Guadalajara metropolitan area, about 12 kilometres northwest of the city centre. The design is notable for its sweeping roof structure and the distinctive tree-like supports visible along the exterior.

World Cup History

Guadalajara has hosted two previous FIFA World Cups, both at the old Estadio Jalisco, which the city used before Estadio Akron was built. The tradition runs deep.

At the 1970 World Cup, Guadalajara hosted what was arguably the tournament’s most compelling group: Brazil, England, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. England, the reigning world champions, faced Brazil here in a group stage match on June 7. Gordon Banks’ save from Pele’s downward header remains widely considered the greatest save in football history. Brazil won 1-0. That same Guadalajara group also contained England’s match against Czechoslovakia and Brazil vs Romania.

At the 1986 World Cup, Guadalajara’s group stage included Denmark, who were one of the surprises of the tournament. Preben Elkjaer, Michael Laudrup, and Soren Lerby were among the most exciting players in Mexico that summer. Denmark won their group with six points before being eliminated in the round of 16 by Spain.

2026 is Guadalajara’s third World Cup. Estadio Akron is a modern, purpose-built club stadium rather than the old Jalisco, but the city’s love of the tournament and the fierce local identity of the Chivas fanbase ensure the atmosphere will carry that history forward.
